From a technical perspective, windscreens are comprised of laminated glass that is designed not to shatter upon impact. The lamination is two layers of glass sandwiched either side of a clear plastic layer. The lamination is an obvious safety feature that protects vehicle occupants in the event of impact, or a foreign object hitting the windscreen itself.
Side and rear windows however are made of toughened safety glass that tends to shatter upon any forceful contact. These windows are generally broken as a result of burglary to steal contents located within the vehicle. Toughened safety glass produces rounded pebble fragments that are designed to prevent injury to vehicle occupants.
